Light plays an important role in the novel The City of Ember. What U.S. city was the first to use light bulbs, instead of gas lights or candles, in their cities street lamps. (Hint: this is a Boys Hope Girls Hope city). And in what year did this invention "come to light?"
Monday, October 19th
Hunger Games uses the backdrop of reality television to remind citizens what happens when they try to rebel. While the reality television that we may choose to view is not quite as cruel (although some could argue otherwise), this genre of television started as something fairly humorous. What reality show is know as the "grandfather" of reality television and what is the basic premise of this show?
Tuesday, October 20th
In The City of Ember items are rationed so that supplies do not run out. Research other times either in our country's or in our world's history when items were rationed. During this time period, what explanation have you found as to why items were rationed? Are there any similarities between what was happening during this historical period and the novel?
Wednesday, October 21st
If you were stranded in the wilderness without food, could you survive? In Hunger Games, knowing what plants are edibel and which are poisonous has dire implications. Send a picture and a description of a commonly found plant in your geographical area that you could gather and eat to survive.
Thursday, October 22nd
Can you image a world without color? Would a world without color be a world without art? In the novel, The City of Ember, Lina can not resist spending her money on beautiful colored pencils because their color and beauty are so unlike her dark world. As a house, research and find one piece of art--either a painting, drawing or sculpture--that reminds you why the world is (or can be) a beautiful place to live. Send a picture of the art and a 2-3 sentence description as to why you chose that work as model of beauty.
Friday, October 23rd (the last question of the day)
Both novels, Hunger Games, and The City of Ember, are first books in a series. If you are reading The City of Ember research the next book, The People of Sparks. If you are reading Hunger Games research the next book, Catching Fire. Write a 1-2 sentence description of the book and a 1-2 sentence statement as to whether or not you and your fellow scholars will continue reading the series and why.
